How Much Does a Tooth Extraction Cost

It can feel incredibly disheartening to know your wisdom teeth must be extracted. It’s important to remember that removing wisdom teeth is especially standard as many patients end up extracting these teeth for health reasons. Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that start to grow in your late teens to mid 20s. These molars need to be removed for a number of reasons. Wisdom teeth are usually extracted if they are growing in crooked or if they are impacted, if your jaw is too small, or if they form cavities or gum disease.

Even if your wisdom teeth fully grow in perfectly straight and don’t affect your other natural teeth, your dentist may still recommend having them removed. Why? Because wisdom teeth are notorious for forming cavities as they are the hardest teeth to brush in the mouth and can contract gum disease much quicker than any other teeth in your mouth.

When you are at this age, paying for a wisdom tooth extraction may not be at the top of your payment list. However, it is an incredibly smart decision for the future for you to remove the wisdom teeth at this age. Some wisdom teeth extractions can cost a patient somewhere around $100 or $200 per tooth; this cost can vary if you live in a small rural city or a large metropolitan city. In some expensive cases, a tooth extraction can even be around $800 per tooth. The price of the tooth extraction will also highly depend upon whether or not the extraction is a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. A highly complicated surgical removal will likely be two or three times more than the price of a simple extraction.

A Simple Extraction

A typical or a routine tooth extraction usually means the tooth is corrupted and has grown in with proper positioning and doesn’t have any portions missing due to fracture or decay. This type of tooth can easily be extracted using simple dental tools that can loosen up the tooth from above and slightly below the gum line and have it pulled out with a dental device similar to pliers. The price for a simple extraction will include the removal itself as well as the local anesthetic that will be administered for during the procedure. The price will also include some stitches if the extraction site is in need of stitches. If there are any post-operation complications, the cost of this extraction should also cover treatments for these complications.

A Surgical Extraction

Surgical tooth extraction of a permanent tooth is also a fairly normal procedure. However, it requires additional steps in order for the extraction to be fully made. The dentist will likely cut into the gum line as well as trimming down some surrounding bone or cut the tooth into pieces to remove it cleanly. Surgical tooth extraction price will generally be higher because the sedation will likely be required as opposed to just a local anesthetic.
